“Sea Org” focuses on Scientology, and people’s predisposed notions of it. Through satire, both in the play itself and in the footnotes, this religion is explored and reflected upon. The characters interact with each other, outsiders, and church members, showing people of all types and how they view Scientology as a whole.
My work evolved from a satirical play to a meta-fiction piece of literature, and has many inspirations. There is a story within the footnotes between the two “narrators,” which adds to the subject matter of the play itself. It appears that the two “narrators” are having a conversation of sorts in the footnotes, writing their opinions and questions as annotations. Towards the end, one of the narrators seems to have gone insane. Those lines in particular, and the idea of a story in notes that adds to the main story, is inspired by House of Leaves. That work includes multiple narrators, footnotes upon footnotes, and multiple descents into madness. My project, similarly, works both as a stand alone stage play or as a short story written in a Greek play format. It was heavily inspired by the lost Greek play Baptae, which follows a similar story structure. That play, and the plot, are outlined in the preface of my work.
